vespula vulgaris

COMMON WASPS

The scientific name of this wasp is VESPULA VULGARIS. This wasp is similar to the German wasps. There is a very little difference between them.

After I learnt their scientific names and the similarity of these two wasps I closely looked at their picture and films I made and noticed they were indeed two different wasps.

The difference is that the Common Wasp has an anchor on its face and the German wasp has two or three dots.

However, both the species of wasps are very important and useful for plants. They both are amazing predator insects. I haven’t had any luck yet catching Common Wasps eating any other insects but I have seen and filmed German Wasp eating Buxus Tree Moth Caterpillar on our Buxus Plants.

However, I filmed Common Wasp eating Apples.

VESPULA VULGARIS eating Apple

I saw the common wasps active from spring until winter started. In our garden I see them eating nectar from the flowers, eating our fruits.

If anyone like to learn more about this Common Wasp, the following are the best resources I have found . They are the experts and one of them is wikipedia.
